The MAX8545EUB+ is a cost-effective, wide input voltage range step-down (buck) controller featuring foldback current limit in a 10-pin µMAX package. It drives low-cost N-channel MOSFETs for both high-side switching and synchronous rectification, eliminating the need for an external current sense resistor. The device provides lossless short circuit and current limiting by monitoring the Rds(on) of the low-side MOSFET, with a current-limit threshold of 320mV. It offers foldback current protection to minimize power dissipation during short circuits. The IC can be shut down by pulling the COMP/EN pin low using an open-collector or low-capacitance, open-drain device. It is compatible with low-cost aluminum electrolytic capacitors. An input undervoltage lockout prevents operation during power sag to protect external MOSFETs. Internal soft start reduces inrush current. Applications include set-top boxes, telecom power supplies, cable modems & routers, graphics cards, and video supplies. Operating voltage ranges from 2.7V to 28V, with an ambient temperature range from -40°C to 85°C. Features include foldback short circuit protection with low-cost external components, no additional bias voltage required, an output voltage approximately 0.8V to 0.83×VIN, up to 95% efficiency, adaptive gate drivers to prevent shoot-through, a switching frequency of 300kHz, and thermal shutdown protection. The device is pin-compatible with the MAX1967.
